Sabina Lee Gallery is pleased to present, Red Shoes, Mask, Face…and Tears…,by Los Angeles based artist Jung Hwa Lee. Lee’s delicate ceramic figures are solitary childlike wanderers populating an environment detached from a place they can call home. Her work illustrates the isolation and insecurity she has experienced moving between the United States and Korea since 2007. Lee investigates differences in language, culture, and public space by utilizing otherworldly narratives that allow the viewer to experience a setting that is as mysterious and unexpected as Lee’s current residence is to her.
Weeping masks, cages, and characters’ trapped between generations inhabit Lee’s exhibition at Sabina Lee Gallery. Red Shoes, Mask, Face…and Tears…, continues to explore her experience of shifting identities in the absence of the culture and family inherent to her. Her trepidation about aging and anxiety brought on by independence are juxtaposed with the youthful wonder in exploration and excitement of unrealized travels. In their merger they create a fantastic, if sometimes haunting, world that asks for a surrender to the unknown.
Jung Hwa Lee received an MFA in Fine Arts from UCLA in 2011 and from Hongik University, Seoul Korea in 2008. She has exhibited widely in the United States and Asia. This is her first exhibition at Sabina Lee Gallery.
